Direct mail is the delivery of advertising material to recipients via the US postal service. Direct mail is used by millions of businesses around the world to promote their products and services to potential customers. Direct mail is typically mailed to customers using a bulk mail permit which qualifies for a lower postage rate than normal mail. In 2017 more than half of all mail in the United States was direct mail advertising. Because of the low unit cost of offset printing combined with low bulk mail rates the post office offers, direct mail advertising can be an effective way to reach out to large numbers of potential new customers. Although direct mail response rates can be low (industry average is around 2.61%), direct mail can deliver new customers to your business for a fairly low cost of acquisition per new customer.  For every $167 spent of direct mail in the US, marketers sell $2095 in goods.

Targeting customers on a 1:1 level increases response rates up to 50% or more.

To increase the response rates of direct mail campaigns many businesses opt to incorporate variable data or personalization of the content in their direct mail pieces. Digital printing allows direct mail to be personalized as it is printed. Personalized direct mail may include printing the recipients name within the body of the marketing message. Additionally you may use demographic information about your potential customers to personalize the message or even the pictures printed. For example, if the direct mail piece is going to a women the images printed might include a female using the product being sold and the text would be written from a woman’s perspective. If a customer has purchased from you business before you want to follow up with a direct mail advertisement for an updated product or a companion product. For example, if a customer leased a car and you know that lease is nearing it end you might send a direct mail piece that shows a new model of the car they previously perchased. Personalizing or targeting direct mail can increase response rates significantly (double or triple standard direct mail rates).
